Health Notes

Biotin

Biotin
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Type 2 Diabetes
Dose: 9 to 16 mg dailyBiotin is a B vitamin needed to process glucose. When people with type 2 diabetes were given 9 mg of biotin per day for two months, their fasting glucose levels dropped dramatically.1 Biotin may also reduce pain from diabetic nerve damage.2 Some doctors try 9 to 16 mg of biotin per day for a few weeks to see if blood sugar levels will fall.

When people with type 1 diabetes were given 16 mg of biotin per day for one week, their fasting glucose levels dropped by 50%.1 Biotin may also reduce pain from diabetic nerve damage (neuropathy).2 Some doctors try 16 mg of biotin for a few weeks to see if blood sugar levels will fall.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Support
Dose: Use a prenatal supplement that includes biotin

Biotin deficiency may occur in as many as 50% of pregnant women.1 As biotin deficiency in pregnant animals results in birth defects, it seems reasonable to use a prenatal multiple vitamin and mineral formula that contains biotin.

Seborrheic Dermatitis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Preliminary studies have found that injecting either the infant or the nursing mother with biotin may be an effective treatment for cradle cap.1, 2 Studies of oral biotin have yielded mixed results in infants. Older preliminary studies and case reports suggest that 4 mg per day of oral biotin might be sufficient for mild cases of cradle cap, but 10 mg per day was required for more severe cases.3 Two more recent, controlled trials found that oral biotin (4 or 5 mg per day) produced no benefit.4, 5 Thus, the scientific support for using oral biotin to treat cradle cap is weak. The role of biotin in adult seborrheic dermatitis has not been studied.

Brittle Nails
Dose: 2.5 mg daily

Biotin, a B vitamin, is known to strengthen hooves in animals. As a result, Swiss researchers investigated the use of biotin in strengthening brittle fingernails in humans, despite the fact that it remains unclear exactly how biotin affects nail structure. An uncontrolled trial of 2.5 mg biotin per day found improved firmness and hardness in almost all cases after an average treatment time of 5.5 months.1 In a controlled trial using 2.5 mg of biotin per day, women with brittle nails, who had their nail thickness measured before and at six to fifteen months after, found their nail thickness increased by 25%. As a result, splitting of nails was reduced. In an uncontrolled study of people who had been taking biotin for brittle nails in America, 63% showed improvement from taking biotin.2 Although the amount of research on the subject is quite limited and positive effects do not appear in all people, those people having brittle nails may want to consider a trial period of at least several months, using 2.5 mg per day of biotin.

Comments about GNC Hair, Skin & Nails Formula:

I purchased this product a while ago but didn't start using it until more recently. Before starting these pills, my hair was straw like and grew thin once I dyed it, though naturally my hair is thick, smooth and long. I wanted something to restore my natural hair. I started using Wen hair treatment, and really wasn't thrilled with it at all. So I decided to give these pills a shot. Now, my hair is smooth, the breakage is minimal, and it handles heat much better than before.

As for my nails, this product has IMMENSELY helped with nail strength and growth. I get my nails done every 2 weeks (gel polish) and I might have to start getting them done every week due to how fast they are growing! Less than one week into using this product, about one-fourth of my nail grew out.

My skin is naturally extremely dry and I have 1-2 blemishes at a time. I know its not a lot of acne, but because the rest of my face is clear those blemishes stand out on my face. These pills have moisturized my skin from the inside, out. It has also helped push the acne to the surface of my skin and thus get rid of blemishes quickly.

I give this product 4 stars instead of 5 because the skin on the rest of my body hasn't really improved, only the skin on my face has improved.

I am so happy with this product and can't wait to see what 6 months-1 year of usage will bring me!

Comments about GNC Hair, Skin & Nails Formula:

this product does work, But must take two pills per day at separate times.
For best results, take w/the women's ultra mega multivitamin and omega 3 fish oil.
The reason you take it with a MV is because the hair, skin and nails supplement has some good nutritional content in its ingredient listing. However, if your body is deficient in some of these nutrients the vitamins in the HSN will be utilized for health reasons, what might be left over will go towards the benefit of the HSN.
By taking the MV your body will get the nutrients it needs and the HSN supplement will be used to its full potential.
The Omega 3 will aid with fatty acids for that soft sleek look in your hair and provide durability, lessening the split ends and flyaways.
A nice bonus item is MSM, which is a sulfur and that provides collagen enhancement which is a protein aiding in stronger hair.
In the morning with breakfast take your MV, HSN and Fish Oil.
With dinner, one more of each. If you purchase the MSM take that maybe midday with food.
Drink plenty of water to aid with the absorption of the B vitamins.
