Health Notes

Digestive Enzymes

Digestive Enzymes
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Sprains and Strains
4 to 8 tablets a day of proteolytic enzymes containing trypsin, chymotrypsin, and/or bromelainas Proteolytic Enzymes3 stars[3 stars] Proteolytic enzymes, including bromelain, may be helpful in healing sprains and strains because they are anti-inflammatory and appear to promote tissue healing.

Acne Rosacea
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] Digestive enzymes have been reported anecdotally to improve rosacea symptoms.
Allergies and Sensitivities and Food Allergies
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] Proteolytic enzymes may theoretically reduce allergy symptoms by breaking down undigested protein to sizes that are too small to cause allergic reactions.
Chronic Candidiasis
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] Digestive enzymes inhibit the overgrowth of candida and prevent it from becoming established in the small intestine.
Crohn's Disease
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] Supplementing with enzymes might improve the nutrient malabsorption that is often associated with Crohn's disease.
Low Back Pain
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] Several trials have reported reduced pain and swelling, and/or faster healing in people with a variety of conditions who use papain.

Digestive enzymes are complex proteins involved in digestion that stimulate chemical changes in other substances. They work optimally at specific temperature and pH. Digestive enzymes include pancreatic enzymes, plant-derived enzymes, and fungal-derived enzymes. There are three classes of digestive enzymes: proteolytic enzymes needed to digest protein, lipases needed to digest fat, and amylases needed to digest carbohydrates.

Comments about GNC Total Lean Pre-Diet Cleanse - Citrus:

I'm going to be very honest and say that I am not sure if this is effective or not. I don't weigh myself, I workout, eat very clean, don't drink coffee or tea or anything, actually except for water & fresh squeezed/juiced juices and I am a vegetarian, so following a clean diet of fruits and veggies isn't really so drastic for me. But, I that's also part of what was appealing to me about this product.

I used it over a weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

That Friday, purchased a container of blueberries and a container of raspberries for each day. I also made some apple sauce from scratch, which literally had one ingredient--- apples.

I took two large water bottles and put 1/2 of the cleanse (16 oz) in each bottle along with 16 oz of water, each. I figured this would make my weekend easier since I wouldn't have to keep measuring the portions out.

On Saturday morning, I woke up and had some of the berries, a few sips of the cleanse and then headed out for the day. Throughout the day, I sipped the cleanse and was not hungry. So not hungry that I sat through my friends eating dinner and wasn't tempted at all to order anything- even after walking about 5 miles. When I got home, I put the cleanse in the freezer to see what kind of a slushy drink it would make and had some of the apple sauce I had made along with some berries. I did my upper body routine and watched some television. An hour and a half later, I took the cleanse out of the freezer and had myself a nice refreshing treat. I finished the rest of the berries and went to sleep.

Sunday I woke up and had some berries for breakfast and put the cleanse for the day into the freezer because I liked it much better really, really cold as well as slushy. I had some more berries mid-day and followed it with the cleanse that was now slushy. When I had enough, I put it into the fridge to keep it cold. Later on, I had some more apple sauce and later berries. Since I was home most of the day, I was all out of berries by late afternoon so I figured I'd make some vegetarian "chicken broth" for dinner. I then drank some more of the cleanse and then apple sauce later that evening, followed by my upper body routine.

I was not hungry on this cleanse, but I did watch a couple of movies on Sunday and would have loved to snack on popcorn or something. But, I committed to this and wanted to see it through.

In terms of taste, it tastes like an orange-y version of those freeze pops (the long skinny ones that come in all sorts of colors), or orange jello, or something. I preferred it really cold or slush and didn't think it was bad. Someone compared it to furniture polish. Maybe they had an expired bunch or didn't add enough water. If furniture polish tasted like this, some people might drink it. I really didn't mind the flavor, and I am used to only real oranges and real fresh squeezed orange juice, daily.

I think the most important thing is to make sure that you are following what the instructions say. If you are not willing to make that commitment for 48 hours- 16 or so of which you will be asleep, anyway, then this isn't for you.

As I said, I don't know if it actually worked, but I didn't feel hungry or horrible at all. And, to the person who compared it to a sports drink, those make me sick to my stomach.

Do I think you necessarily need this to jumpstart your fitness/nutrition plan? Absolutely not. But for a lot of people, it just might give them the boost they need to ease into wanting to eat a little better. And, remember, in order to really see a difference with any program, you need to make changes. Don't try to lose more than 1-2 pounds a week. And, don't do anything drastic that you know you won't be able to sustain in the future. Exercising is important- even if it's just parking at the other end of a parking lot and walking a little further to the entrance of a store.

I don't know if this is a helpful review, but I figured I'd write my experience since I came here to learn about the experiences of others.

This was just an expensive bottle of Gatorade G2 Lemon flavor. It did absolutely nothing for me. I never had the urge for a BM while using this product. I will not use this again, nor recommend this product.

Comments about GNC Total Lean Pre-Diet Cleanse - Citrus:

The price was right given my current financial disaster (the quest for fitness can be quite expensive). Read reviews and talked to friends who have used the product. Received the same mixed review from them. Decided to give it a spin. Followed directions to the letter. Didn't feel any kind of difference other than a bit of bloating on the first day. The taste is tolerable when consumed ice cold. Stuck to fruits, veggies, Jello, and clear soups, black decaf coffee, and herbal teas. Felt like I was starving to death. At the end of day 1, decided to have a cup of dieters' tea. Not sure if that's what kicked off the bathroom adventures on day 2. Lost roughly 4 lbs. from the 2 days. Overall, not crazy about it but things have different effects on different people so I'll just say it was an experience.

Comments about GNC Total Lean Pre-Diet Cleanse - Citrus:

Love this "Pre-Diet Cleanse." My biggest fear with trying something like this - is that I will be hungry. Well, GNC got this one right. I DID not get hungry during the entire 48 hour period I used this cleanse.

I got a large water bottle and filled half Pre-diet Cleanse and half water and sipped on it throughout the day instead of at set times. I refilled as needed.

I did have to keep reminding myself - this is a CLEANSE not a FAST! So, I was sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables - no meats, dairy, gluten, or processed foods.

Whether or not it actually "cleansed" my systems - I don't really know. What I do know is that it was a nice jump-start to my new healthy lifestyle. It was nice (and smart) to have a 2-day period of giving my body a break with a vegan/vegetarian diet without constant hunger pangs.

The taste was good too. Nice and refreshing. By the end of the 2nd day, I was getting tired of the flavor - but that is to be expected.

I lost 2 lbs while on this product, and continued to lose a total of 10 so far over the past month - using the Total Lean 25 protein shakes.

I still have another 20 lbs to lose over the next 2 months. I plan on using this Pre-Diet Cleanse at the beginning of each month to re-ignite the momentum.

Good luck on your health quest, too!

Comments about GNC Total Lean Pre-Diet Cleanse - Citrus:

I just finished this 48 hour cleanse. Along with it I ate VERY little food(all natural only). Surprisingly, with the small amount of food I consumed along with this cleanse, I rarely felt hunger because of the fiber in it. This product will not make you lose weight on your own. It is for cleansing purposes only and is to be used along with diet and exercise if you wish to lose weight. Personally, I love this product. I feel fantastic. If you're interested, give it a try.

Although, relatively healthy already, my husband and I wanted to kick the year off with a bang so we tried this cleanse.

I actually did like how it tasted; it wasn't the best tasting, but good enough to drink easily. We stuck pretty much to fruits and vegetables with a bean soup for dinner one night. I lost 2 pounds during those two days and my husband lost about 4. I'm small to begin with (5'2", 116 lbs) so two pounds was a lot! We definitely are using this cleanse next time!

Great to use for exactly what it says! (pre-diet cleanse) Gets the job done, but isn't harsh. You denfinitely won't need to have a toilet next to you at all times, like a laxative, but it does clean you out. Will absolutely purchase this again in the future!
