Energy Bars-A Weight-Loss Secret Weapon
Energy Bars-A Weight-Loss Secret Weapon
Decide whether your bar will be a snack or part of a mealWhether part of a planned program or eaten on the fly, bars bridge the hunger gap and boost your energy. When you're working on your waistline, today's bars can support your weight-loss efforts, especially when fresh food and refrigeration aren't in easy reach. And when you're in a rush, munching on an energy bar is one of the best stop-gap measures for those sudden "I'm ravenous" moments. Downing a healthy bar can even prevent a "roadside attraction" binge of fries, shakes, or convenience-store goodies like high-calorie, high-fat chips and cookies. In other words, energy bars can be a helpful tool in your diet plan.
Put your hunger behind bars
First, you need to decide whether your bar will be a snack or part of a meal. "If it's a snack, the bars should have less than 180 calories," advises Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, the national media spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association in Chicago. "If it's a meal, the bar should be more than 200 calories and needs to be eaten with fruit and vegetables to satisfy you for four or more hours till you eat again."
In fact, substituting an energy bar-paired with an apple or veggie salad-for one meal each day can help you lose weight. "By adding fruits and vegetables, which are high in fiber and water, you'll feel more full," says Blatner. "This can help accelerate weight loss." If your goal is to drop a few pounds, Blatner says you need to read the nutrient label to make sure your meal-replacing bar contains:
- at least 200 calories
- 3 grams or less saturated fat
- 3 grams or more fiber (to help you feel full)
- at least 10 grams of protein (to help tide you over till your next meal)
Indulge in your favorite flavors
As a general rule, look for bars with the least sugar and the most fiber (in other words, "good carbs") or protein (whatever your preference) to avoid the crash that comes from eating bars that are more like candy disguised in "natural" packaging.
"After you've read the label, it all boils down to personal preference," says Blatner. Love dried berries? Go for a fruity bar. Granola, nut, or yogurt fan? Store shelves are stocked with bars for every discriminating taste. You can take your pick from grain- or yogurt-based, to nut- or fruit-dense bars.
Simply scan the ingredient list for the foods or flavors you fancy and cross-check it with the label's nutrition facts to ensure it fits with your diet goals.
Pick the best bar for the job
As the seemingly endless choices will attest, you can find a bar to fit your evolving healthy lifestyle needs. Lifting weights? Try a high-protein bar favored by weight-trainers to help repair muscle. Love jogging, hiking, and biking? Look for high-carb bars preferred by the distance runners who crave instant energy.
If you're interested in eating fewer preservatives and getting the maximum nutrients from the foods you eat, you might like a raw energy bar. The tastes may vary widely but they are typically packed with robust ingredients such as nuts, nectar, berries, and ginger.
Enjoy!Nancy Gottesman, a nutrition writer and mother in southern California, admits to needing way more energy than these bars can provide!Copyright 2013 Aisle7. All rights reserved. Aisle7.com

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Bar - Vanilla Zest:
Where would I be without these bars!! I have lost 20 pounds in a month/ 54 pounds in all. These bars keep me full for a minimum of 5 hours. I can't make it thru the day without them. I'm down to a sexy 159. I'm 5'8. I look great. If I'm full, I don't want to eat therefore maintaining my weight. Tastes good enough for me to stay slim! Ha! That's all that matters. Better than the Peanut Butter ones any day.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Bar - Vanilla Zest:
My personal trainer recommended protein bars to me. Since I like vanilla, I picked these bars up. It's kind of like vanilla with more of a lemony zing to it, but it isn't sour. The texture is nice too; it's not hard like other bars are. It's a little messy at times because the little icing pieces and some crumbs were in my lap after eating. It's a great meal replacement because it is filling. I didn't give it 5 stars because it does contain caffeine. Overall, however, I like this product and will buy more.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Bar - Vanilla Zest:
Just saw it and wanna try it, cuz I am so sick of the Peanut Butter & chocolate combination. Taste like a unsweeten lemon bar. You do not taste alot of vanilla in it. The frosting is okay. Reminds me of a powerbar without the wetness. This is a little bitter taste at the end, which a little water will take out. Good for a snack too.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Bar - Vanilla Zest:
I tried out of of these for lunch at work on a day I didn't have a full shift and thus didn't receive a lunch break. I enjoy the peanut butter chocolate chip bar, but this one isn't as good. It's edible, but I don't know if I would say much more then that. The vanilla "icing" on the bar tasted a bit like rice noodle to me; which was really odd to experience with the awkward vanilla/lemon undertone. I would stick to the other flavor of this bar personally.

At first bite, thought I tasted a 'vitamin' taste and thought I would take them back (bought a box) but i continued to eat the bar and I got used to the flavor. It wasnt bad. It actually curbed my appitite too. :0) Looking forward to trying the PB flavor.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Bar - Vanilla Zest:
I had tried the peanut butter ones of theses and thought that the vanilla would be along the same quality. I LOVE my vanilla bean shakes, but I am very disappointed in the taste, and rather irritated that I spent 160 calories on comething that resembles pledge meets a vanilla candle. Must be for a very specific type of taste- which I do not own.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Bar - Vanilla Zest:
This tastes wonderful! I was skeptic about trying it cause all the other meal replacement bars don't fill me up, or they don't taste good at all. But I tried it based on the reviews I saw here. And I ate one to curb my appetite, and I felt full! Did not expect that, but I am happy about that.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Bar - Vanilla Zest:
I love my Total Lean Vanilla Bean shake! But these bars were AWFUL. They were probally the worst tasting protien bar I have ever had! And I have had a lot! Don't buy these, stick with the shake.
