Health Notes

Oregon Grape

Oregon Grape
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Bitter herbs are thought to stimulate digestive function by increasing saliva production and promoting both stomach acid and digestive enzyme production.1 As a result, they are particularly used when there is low stomach acid but not in heartburn (where too much stomach acid could initially exacerbate the situation). These herbs literally taste bitter. Some examples of bitter herbs include greater celandine, wormwood, gentian, dandelion, blessed thistle, yarrow, devil's claw, bitter orange, bitter melon, juniper, andrographis, prickly ash, and centaury.2. Bitters are generally taken either by mixing 1-3 ml tincture into water and sipping slowly 10-30 minutes before eating, or by making tea, which is also sipped slowly before eating.

Some bitters widely used in traditional medicine in North America include yarrow, yellow dock, goldenseal, Oregon grape, and vervain. Oregon grape's European cousin barberry has also traditionally been used as a bitter. Animal studies indicate that yarrow, barberry, and Oregon grape, in addition to stimulating digestion like other bitters, may relieve spasms in the intestinal tract.3

Diarrhea
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Due to of its supposed antimicrobial activity, goldenseal has a long history of use for infectious diarrhea. Its major alkaloid, berberine (also found in barberry and Oregon grape), has been shown to improve infectious diarrhea in some double-blind trials.1 Negative studies have generally focused on people with cholera, while positive studies investigated viral diarrhea or diarrhea due to strains of E. coli. These studies generally used 400-500 mg berberine one to three times per day. Because of the low amount of berberine in most goldenseal products, it is unclear how effective the whole root or root extracts would be in treating diarrhea.

Infection
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Herbs that support a person's immune system in the fight against microbes and directly attack microbes include the following: barberry, echinacea, elderberry, goldenseal, licorice, Oregon grape, osha, and wild indigo.

Parasites
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Berberine is derived from several plants, including barberry, Oregon grape, goldenseal, and goldthread (Coptis chinensis). Preliminary trials have shown that berberine can be used successfully to treat giardia infections.1, 2 In addition, test tube studies show that berberine kills amoebae, although it is not known whether this effect occurs in humans.3 The amount required is approximately 200 mg three times per day for an adult-a level high enough to potentially cause side effects. Therefore, berberine should not be used without consulting a healthcare provider.

Psoriasis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

An ointment containing Oregon grape (10% concentration) has been shown in a clinical trial to be mildly effective against moderate psoriasis but not more severe cases.1 Whole Oregon grape extracts were shown in one laboratory study to reduce inflammation often associated with psoriasis.2 In this study, isolated alkaloids from Oregon grape did not have this effect. This suggests that there are other active ingredients besides alkaloids in Oregon grape. Barberry, which is very similar to Oregon grape, is believed to have similar effects. An ointment, 10% of which contains Oregon grape or barberry extract, can be applied topically three times per day.

Urinary Tract Infection
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Goldenseal is reputed to help treat many types of infections. It contains berberine, an alkaloid that may prevent UTIs by inhibiting bacteria from adhering to the wall of the urinary bladder.1 Goldenseal and other plants containing berberine (such as Oregon grape) may help in the treatment of UTIs. These herbs have not, however, been studied for the treatment of UTIs in humans.

Chronic Candidiasis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Berberine is an alkaloid found in various plants, including goldenseal, barberry, Oregon grape, and goldthread. Berberine exhibits a broad spectrum of antibiotic and antifungal activity in test tube, animal, and human studies.1, 2 Berberine has shown effective antidiarrheal activity in a number of diarrheal diseases,3, 4, 5 and it may offer the same type of relief for the diarrhea seen in patients with chronic candidiasis. Doctors familiar with the use of berberine-containing herbs sometimes recommend taking 2 to 4 grams of the dried root (or bark) or 250 to 500 mg of an herbal extract three times a day. While isolated berberine has been studied, none of these herbs has been studied in humans with chronic candidiasis.

Parts Used & Where Grown

Oregon grape is an evergreen shrub which grows throughout the American northwest. It is somewhat misnamed, as the fruit are not actually grapes. It is, however, grown in Oregon (it is the official state flower). Oregon grape is a close relative of barberry(Berberis vulgaris), and shares many common uses and constituents. The root is used medicinally.

Comments about MHP Maximum Human Performance Dark Rage™- Grape:

I have tried and used many different preworkouts. This product is very effective from what I've seen so far: good energy, awareness, response. The downside is it tastes horrible. It almosts tastes like a grape flavored raw piece of pork. It's hard not to try and rush it down with how bad it tastes.

Comments about MHP Maximum Human Performance Dark Rage™- Grape:

I take Dark Rage before every workout, and use it in different ways.

First of all, you have to be very careful with this product. I was stupid the first time I used it and chugged a full dose on an empty stomach at 6am before my workout. I experienced dizziness, shortness of breath, and felt like I was having a bad drug trip until I vomited the excess out of my body. It got rough about an hour after taking it.

Having developed a respect for the potency of this product, I figured out how to stomach a full dose by sipping it slowly over a period of about 45 minutes and drinking plenty of water before entering the gym. If I don't finish it all, I will water the remainder down and continue drinking it during the workout.

On Cardio days I only take 1/3 scoop.

I am not a professional body builder nor have I ever done steroids, so for some this product may seem to be all hype. I am into Yoga, Martial Arts, and Hippy things like meditation and altered states of consciousness.

When I take Dark Rage, I feel a euphoria that literally overcomes any mental fatigue that gets in the way of me working out hard and to my full potential. I am able to do each and every exercise (whether it be resistance with weights, an hour and a half of hatha yoga, or intense cardiovascular training) with an abandon that does not stop because of a reaction to pain or fatigue. I am calm, focused, and completely aware and inside of my body.

On resistance days when taking a full scoop, the muscles I am working feel like they are going to explode. Like I said, I am not an experienced weight lifter, so some hardcore guys might see a very minor effect from this product, but for me, I am extremely healthy and sensitive to these kinds of herbal / nutrient infusions, and this stuff literally gets me high ... I see geometric shapes and subtle colors in the field of my vision.

It wakes me up earl in the morning way better than a cup of coffee. I am stacking this product with dark matter. I feel Dark Rage is a poison which turns me into a raging beast (sounds corny, but I've been completely crushing my workouts) and dark matter is the antidote. Between these two products, I feel completely amazing and ready to start my day, and each workout is a religious experience.

I am not sure how long I will take Dark Rage ... it is very hard on the system. So there is a dependency issue which I will have to confront in a few months ... this stuff is addicting. But overall, I love my Dark Rage. The Grape Flavor tastes really excellent to me.

Comments about MHP Maximum Human Performance Dark Rage™- Grape:

I gave DR a try since my N.O. Xplode was running low. It got me incredibly energized, so much so that it seemed detrimental, like I was tense, with elevated blood pressure & the shakes. On day two of my trial, I gassed-out hard 15 minutes into my workout & felt nauseous. I also felt nauseous on day 3. I workout in the evenings, so I took DR anywhere from 6:00 - 8:00PM, and was kept awake tossing & turning until well after 2:00AM. The taste is pretty bad, but tolerable. I took one scoop, but suppose I could have tried half-dosing. I think I will return this product.
