The bark of the tree is removed, cut into small pieces, and dried for one year before being used medicinally. Fresh cascara bark has an emetic or vomit-inducing property and therefore is not used.

I use this supplement about 3 times a week as needed. I am normally on the constipated side, and 2 years ago had gastric bypass surgery, which caused nearly always constipation. I had been taking fiber, and stool softeners, which barely worked. I would have to take a dose of milk of magnesia 2 - 3 times a week to keep from getting fully constipated. Now since starting Cascara Sagrada, my constipation is nearly gone. I take 1 capsule in the morning and then another just before dinner time. I do this maybe 3 times a week, and sometimes that is too often. I feel that if I tried just 1 a day, it would probably be too much, so I am happy doing this way. I will be sticking to using this from now on! Goodbye nasty tasting Milk of Magnesia!!
