Health Notes

Amino Acids Overview

Amino Acids Overview
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Used for AmountWhy
Liver Cirrhosis

(L-Ornithine-L-Aspartate)
18 grams daily of L-ornithine-L-aspartate2 stars[2 stars] As both a supplement and injection, L-ornithine-L-aspartate has been shown to significantly improve liver function, mental status, and brain function.
Alcohol Withdrawal

(Glutamine, L-Tyrosine, Multivitamin, Phenylalanine)
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] In double-blind research, alcoholics treated with L-tyrosine combined with DLPA (D,L-phenylalanine), L-glutamine, prescription L-tryptophan, plus a multivitamin had reduced withdrawal symptoms and decreased stress.
Athletic Performance

(Aspartic Acid)
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] Aspartic acid is an amino acid that participates in many biochemical reactions relating to energy and protein. Research suggests that it may help reduce fatigue during exercise.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Twenty amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Eleven of these amino acids can be made by the body itself, while the other nine (called essential amino acids) must come from the diet. The essential amino acids are isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Another amino acid, histidine, is considered semi-essential because the body does not always require dietary sources of it. The nonessential amino acids are arginine, alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamine, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, serine, and tyrosine. Other amino acids, such as carnitine and taurine, are used by the body in ways other than protein-building and are often used therapeutically. L-Theanine is an amino acid found in tea that is said to help relieve stress. Beta-alanine has been used to prevent fatigue during exercise.

Comments about Optimum Nutrition Superior Amino 2222 Tabs:

I read that these tablets, compared to ON's earlier tabs, are easier to swallow. Well, those older pills must've been GIGANTIC because these are exactly bite-sized, especially compared to some of the Amino Acids I've taken from Dymatize. However, When taken as directed, I do appreciate the boost in energy and performance I get in the gym from all the extra protein. More importantly, it aids in recovery time. The more protein I can get in my system, the better. AN INCREDIBLE VALUE! Awesome bang for the buck! You can't go wrong, overall, with this AA package

Comments about Optimum Nutrition Superior Amino 2222 Tabs:

This product is hard to swallow it says that the tabs are easier to swallow and i have not seen nor have i felt that. I will not buy the tabs again. When i cut one in half the sharp edges hurt my throat and still got stuck on the way down. If i didnt open them and buy them on my own i would return them because of how hard they are on my throat. I would go with the capsules. They seem like they would be much easier to swallow.

Comments about Optimum Nutrition Superior Amino 2222 Tabs:

This is a great product. Definitely helps me with recovery and energy. I use it before and after workouts. Pills are HUGE!! I think they must have been orginally for Horses or Cattle. Other than that. I love em. I just bite them up and slug down with water or a flavored drink. Taste like baby formula. Awesome. Buy it, you wont regret it.

I had no issue with the size of these pills; some, may need to break them in half, they're scored already. I have no meat, dairy, or eggs in my diet. I get protein from amino acid tablets and soy beans.

Comments about Optimum Nutrition Superior Amino 2222 Tabs:

I take this product as directed by the Optimum Nutrition stack, also sold here at GNC. The tablets are about an inch in length, and about the the same thickness and width as my ring finger. There's a small dent in the middle to break it in half, but even then it's near impossible for me to swallow. Every time I take one of these, I gag and choke because it's so huge, and no amount of water seems to help.
