Health Notes

Conjugated Linoleic Acid

Conjugated Linoleic Acid
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams daily
Though the evidence is conflicting, some studies have shown CLA to be effective at helping people lose body fat. (more)
Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Conjugated linoleic acid may play a role in reducing body fat. Research has reported that CLA supplementation produces minor gains in muscle size and strength in weight-training men.(more)
Prostate Cancer
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce the risk of cancers at several sites, including breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, skin, and stomach.(more)
Breast Cancer
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce breast cancer risk.(more)
Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams dailyA double-blind trial found that exercising individuals taking 1,800 mg per day of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) lost more body fat after 12 weeks than did a similar group taking a placebo.1 However, two other studies found that amounts of CLA from 0.7 to 3.0 grams per day did not affect body composition.2, 3 Most double-blind trials have found that larger amounts of CLA, 3.2 to 4.2 grams per day, do reduce body fat;4, 5, 6, 7 however, one double-blind study of experienced strength-training athletes reported no effect of 6 grams per day of CLA on body fat, muscle mass, or strength improvement.8

Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a slightly altered form of the essential fatty acid linoleic acid. Animal research suggests an effect of CLA supplementation on reducing body fat.1, 2 Controlled human research has reported that 5.6 to 7.2 grams per day of CLA produces only non-significant gains in muscle size and strength in experienced and inexperienced weight-training men.3, 4, 5 A double-blind study of a group of trained men and women reported reduced body fat in the upper arm after 12 weeks of supplementation with 1.8 grams per day of CLA.6 Further research using more accurate techniques for measuring body composition is needed to confirm these findings.

Comments about GNC Women's Ultra Mega® Active:

These are not meant for losing weight but as a dietary supplement for active people. I have been taking them for a month and my energy level has improved significantly. The vitamins are quite large but I cut them in half and take them two at a time throughout the day and always with food and plenty of water.

Comments about GNC Women's Ultra Mega® Active:

Ive been using this product for a month now. I most defiantly lost inches. The pills are big but I take mine with juice and they go down way better. I don't feel no big huge energy burst but I do feel good from taking them. The girl at gnc said they would lean me out and that's what they are doing. I work out 3 to 4x a week im always also on the thicker side of 200 lbs but this product is amazing.

Comments about GNC Women's Ultra Mega® Active:

I originally was extremely excited to start taking vitamins again but this pack of vitamins truly made me feel negative about vitamins. I cannot stand the smell of the vitamins-- I gag every time I open the pack...But I still take them. Then I pop these babies in my mouth--they are huge but I have no trouble swallowing vitamins so that is not an issue. The issue is the taste-- you might be able to get down the first two but when you realize there are 6 of them that you have to take it becomes rather overwhelming. I would not purchase these EVER again.... But I am going to suck it up and take the ones I have left... :(

Comments about GNC Women's Ultra Mega® Active:

Love it! Does exactly what the saleswoman said it would do. I have been looking for something that would help with weight loss as well as taking all the essentials I would need for working out and recovery. I have noticed that my appetite has decreased significantly as well as the food I desired. Great product. I am not a fan of the size of the pills. That's the only part I dislike.

Comments about GNC Women's Ultra Mega® Active:

I didn't like this product at all. I'm an active adult that exercises 2-3x a week. Taking these vitamins were difficult because of the size. I felt a quick burst of energy for about an hour and then I would crash. This is coming from a person who takes energy pills and drinks red bull without a problem. Furthermore, I had never experienced knee joint pain until I started taking these vitamins. It's very weird and I'm not sure why these vitamins would cause it. All I know is that I didn't have knee pain before until I took these vitamins.

Comments about GNC Women's Ultra Mega® Active:

I took these prior to going to the gym, and while I felt great during my workout, I felt terrible afterward. As soon as I left the gym, I felt really jittery and puked as soon as I got home. I felt with an increase in energy, but not in a good way. I seriously felt like I had a live wire inside my body.
Others complain about the huge pills and bad taste, and I will agree but it is nothing that can't be tolerated. I will not be buying these again. I did have a cup of coffee prior to taking these and that might've exacerbated the jitteriness. Overall, I hated how I felt after taking this vitapak.

These worked for me, I do feel more energetic. I especially like the pack form, so I can take them with me without taking a huge box. Most of the pills are quite large, I have no problem taking them with plenty of water. They do smell and taste awful though, but definitely didn't make me lose appetite or have nausea for a long time. I'd buy them again.
