Vitamin B-Complex
Vitamin B-Complex- Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
- Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
- For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.
Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.
For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Used for Amount Why Wound HealingFollow label directions
[3 stars] Thiamine (vitamin B1), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), and other B vitamins have all been shown to play a role in wound healing. For this reason, some healthcare practitioners recommend a high-potency B vitamin supplement to promote wound healing.Canker Sores300 mg B1 daily, 20 mg B2 daily, 150 mg B6 daily
[2 stars] People with recurrent canker sores may have a B vitamin deficiency. Supplementing with vitamins B1, B2, and B6 has been reported to provide relief.Acne RosaceaRefer to label instructions
[1 star] The relationship between B vitamins and rosacea is unclear, one study found it caused rocacea-like symptoms, other preliminary reports have found benefits.Alcohol WithdrawalRefer to label instructions
[1 star] Research suggests it is possible that successful treatment of B-complex vitamin deficiencies may actually reduce alcohol cravings, because animals crave alcohol when fed a B-complex-deficient diet.AnxietyRefer to label instructions
[1 star] Double-blind research suggests that supplementing with vitamin B-complex multivitamin may reduce feelings of anxiety, perceived stress, and tiredness.
Athletic PerformanceRefer to label instructions

[1 star] For people who have inadequate absorption of vitamin B12 due to low stomach acid, supplementing with vitamin B complex can help correct a deficiency.OsteoporosisRefer to label instructions

[1 star] In some studies, taking vitamin B-complex along with other nutrients appeared to prevent the development of tardive dyskinesia.VitiligoRefer to label instructions
[1 star] PABA, a compound commonly found in B-complex vitamins, has been shown to repigment skin affected by vitiligo. The vitamin B-complex refers to all of the known essential water-soluble vitamins except for vitamin C. These include thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), biotin, folic acid and the cobalamins (vitamin B12).
"Vitamin B" was once thought to be a single nutrient that existed in extracts of rice, liver, or yeast. Researchers later discovered these extracts contained several vitamins, which were given distinguishing numbers. Unfortunately, this has led to an erroneous belief among non-scientists that these vitamins have a special relationship to each other. Further adding to confusion has been the "unofficial" designation of other substances as members of the B-complex, such as choline, inositol, and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), even though they are not essential vitamins.
Each member of the B-complex has a unique structure and performs unique functions in the human body. Vitamins B1, B2, B3, and biotin participate in different aspects of energy production, vitamin B6 is essential for amino acid metabolism, and vitamin B12 and folic acid facilitate steps required for cell division. Each of these vitamins has many additional functions. However, contrary to popular belief, no functions require all B-complex vitamins simultaneously.
Human requirements for members of the B-complex vary considerably-from 3 mcg per day for vitamin B12 to 18 mg per day for vitamin B3 in adult males, for example. Therefore, taking equal amounts of each one-as provided in many B-complex supplements-makes little sense. Furthermore, there is little evidence supporting the use of megadoses of B-complex vitamins to combat everyday stress, boost energy, or control food cravings, unless a person has a deficiency of one or more of them. Again, contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence indicating people should take all B vitamins to avoid an imbalance when one or more individual B vitamin is taken for a specific health condition.
Most multivitamin-mineral products contain the B-complex along with the rest of the essential vitamins and minerals. Since they are more complete than B-complex vitamins alone, multiple vitamin-mineral supplements are recommended to improve overall micronutrient intake and prevent deficiencies.

Comments about GNC Niacin 500:
With my doctor's approval, I began my niacin regime in Feb 1988 based on a book by Robert Kowalski, "The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure." My high cholesterol was considered genetic and diet did not help.
I began on a low dose as per the book, gradually building up to 2500-3000 mgs a day. At that time my cholesterol numbers were: 267 total; 48 HDL; 173 LDL. By May '88, they were: 205 total; 59 HDL; 127 LDL. By Oct '88 they were: 165 total; 56 HDL; 92 LDL. I maintain on 2500 mgs a day and my triglycerides are below 100.
I take regular niacin, not the no-flush, and if you are just beginning, a baby aspirin taken about 30 minutes before the niacin reduces the flushing sensation.
So you see, I have been on this regime for 25 years, with normal liver panels, and have never taking statins. The money I save is astronomical.
My doctor at that time was very impressed and was always willing to let me try alternative methods.Pros

Couldn't get my LDL below 220 until I heard about Niacin. Now I am in low 100's. Cost is much less than prescription meds that the MD had me on. Deal with the flush and you will see the good results for yourself.

Comments about GNC Niacin 500:
Expect a niacin flush up to 30 minutes until your body gets used to the daily use, and expect a niacin flush anytime the dosage is changed. The niacin flush can cause an initial upset stomach and possibly the body turning a redish color (similar to a bad sunburn). The flushing does not hurt, but you may experience a warm sensation, but the flushing will disappear after several days of use. I've tried many different brands, but GNC is the best!

Comments about GNC Niacin 500:
The vitamin niacin has several forms, such as nicotinic acid and niacinamide. High doses of the nicotinic acid form (which is what this product is) have been known to have salutary effects on blood lipids for over 50 years, such as raising HDL. That's the general consensus, although there are some studies and opinions to the contrary. The Linus Pauling Institute (this is NOT an endorsement from them) has some useful info.
The immediate-release form of niacin (like this product) causes flushing in some people some of the time, but the incidence and severity tend to decrease over time. I started off splitting 250 mg tablets, but now I take a 500 mg tablet without any reaction. There are timed-release forms of niacin, but they appear to be more toxic to the liver than the immediate-release form.
The most important thing to understand is that high-dose niacin should be thought of as a drug and you should take it only with a doctor's approval. That said, this product is an economical way to take it, costing only pennies a day.Pros

Comments about GNC Niacin 500:
Have used niacin for years, as recommended by a doctor, to improve my cholesterol count. The product has raised my HDL, lowered my triglycerides and somewhat stabilized my LDL count. I much prefer this to taking any of the relatively new statin drugs, which can have adverse side effects. I do not experience any uncomfortable "flushing" effects.

Comments about GNC Niacin 500:
I've been taking GNC 500mg for five years at 1500mg per day. I have little to no flushing and my lipid profile has improved remarkably. My HDL in particular improved from an average of 38 to 60. Couple this proven effectiveness with low cost and you have a winner. I hope Big Pharma doesn't find a way to screw this bargain up.
