Health Notes

Acne Vulgaris

Acne Vulgaris
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

SupplementAmountWhy
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Apply 4% gel twice per day3 stars[3 stars] In a double-blind trial, applying a topical 4% niacinamide gel twice daily for two months significantly improved acne.
Tea Tree
Apply 5% oil twice per day3 stars[3 stars] Although tea tree oil is slower and less potent than benzoyl peroxide, it has been shown to improve acne with far fewer side effects.
Zinc
60 to 90 mg daily3 stars[3 stars] Several double-blind trials indicate that taking zinc reduces acne severity. Long-term use requires 1 to 2 mg of copper per day to prevent copper deficiency.
Guggul
500 mg extract twice per day2 stars[2 stars] A controlled trial found that guggul (Commiphora mukul) compared favorably to tetracycline in treating cystic acne.
Burdock
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] Tonic herbs such as burdock are believed to have a cleansing action when taken internally and have been used historically to treat skin conditions.
Pantothenic Acid
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] In a preliminary trial, taking panthothenic acid supplements and applying a topical cream improved moderate acne in two months and severe acne within six months.
Vitamin A
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] Under medical supervision, large quantities of vitamin A have been used successfully to treat severe acne. However, the acne typically returns after treatment is discontinued.
Vitamin B6
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] While not proven in research, some reports suggest that it may alleviate adolescent and premenstrual acne, however, another report has suggested that it might make acne worse.
Vitex

(Premenstruation)
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] Some older, preliminary research suggests that vitex might help clear premenstrual acne, possibly by regulating hormonal influences.

About This Condition

Acne vulgaris, also known as common acne, is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands of the skin. It consists of red, elevated areas on the skin that may develop into pustules and even further into cysts that can cause scarring.

Acne vulgaris occurs mostly on the face, neck, and back of most commonly teenagers and to a lesser extent of young adults. The condition results in part from excessive stimulation of the skin by androgens (male hormones). Bacterial infection of the skin also appears to play a role.

Comments about Natralia Acne Rescue Kit:

This product is a great alternative to chemical washes and topical creams. I'm a 20 year old female who has been battling moderate-severe acne since age 14. I was told by a dermatologist that by 18-19 years old I should stop observing acne break outs. That was far from true. My skin got incredibly worse as I was turning 20. I found this product and it has saved me the time and energy of covering up acne with intense make up every morning. I use this system in conjunction with regular acne fighting products. I.e. wash with natralia wash in the morning and with Loreal 2% salicylic acid wash at night. I use the cream every morning and night. These products give my skin a much needed break from chemicals that strip my skin of moisture and a natural healthy glow. My skin has never responded to anything this well. I suggest you buy this product.

Comments about Natralia Acne Rescue Kit:

After two weeks, my face was a complete mess. I have not been this broken out for many years. I hoped it would work because the benzoyl peroxide in the product I had been using was bleaching my clothes. But apparently there is still no substitute. Don't waste your money on this stuff.

Comments about Natralia Acne Rescue Kit:

I was so hopeful, but in the end, disappointed. I am 46 and still dealing with acne (so frustrating). Clearasil DailyClear Acne Vanishing Cream (10% Benzoil Peroxide) works fantastic, but I am constantly bleaching my clothes from it. And salasylic acid makes me breakout. So I was excited to find this stuff that does not contain either. I thought this stuff might be working, so I kept using it for a couple weeks, but I just kept getting worse and worse, so I had to stop and go back to the Clearasil (it really messed my face up!). Actually, my routine is I use Clearasil DailyClear Face Wash, and then moisturize with J&J Body Lotion (if it's gentle enough for a baby, it ought to be gentle enough for my face, and it is), and then I use the Clearasil Acne Cream mentioned above. Tried and true - just have to be careful around any fabric.
