Fuel your body more effectively, and get the most from your workouts
Do you ever feel you're slogging through your workouts, barely able to complete what you've planned, and anxious to hit the showers? Or maybe you've wondered how you might take the next step, fuel your body more effectively, and get the most "bang for your buck" from your workouts. Either way, a great place to start is with the basics, and one of the most basic nutrients for optimal athletic performance is protein.

The A, B, Cs of protein and performance

Muscles are made of protein, so it's no surprise that protein is vital to enhancing their performance. Knowing what type, how much, and when to fit protein into your daily routine is the key to getting the most from this important nutrient.

"Wheying" your options

For repairing hardworking muscles after a cardio or resistance training ("weight lifting") workout, nothing beats whey protein. Whey comes from dairy and allows your muscles to refuel effectively. Whey protein is found in powder form and comes in a variety of flavors, making it easy to incorporate into your diet. It can be stirred into yogurt, added to a smoothie, or mixed vigorously with water or another liquid in a lidded container.

The body best absorbs protein when eaten in amounts ranging from 15 to 30 grams in a single meal or snack. Unless you're a serious body-builder, there's no benefit to eating more than 30 grams of protein at one time.

Whey protein makes its way into muscles most efficiently when taken immediately after a workout, ideally within 30 minutes. Eating whey with carbohydrates promotes the movement of the protein from your bloodstream into your muscles as well. Aim for a ratio of 1 gram of protein for every 2 to 4 grams of carbohydrate.

As an example, combine whey powder to provide about 15 grams of protein in a blender with a banana, ice, and water. A large banana adds around 30 grams of carbohydrate and most whey powders contain a bit of carbohydrate as well. This gives you a finished smoothie with 2 to 3 grams of carbohydrate for every gram of protein-an ideal ratio.

HMB power

Amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Hydroxy-methyl butyrate, or HMB, is a breakdown product of leucine, of of the essential amino acids that are used as building blocks of protein. Studies have shown that HMB can improve strength and help the body maintain muscle mass. Ideally, HMB is used in conjunction with strength training to obtain the most benefit; it is not used to improve cardiovascular athletic performance.

Our bodies can make some HMB, but it isn't found in significant amounts in most foods, so taking a supplement is the best way to get enough HMB to enhance a resistance training routine.

The optimal amount of HMB is about 3 grams per day, but there isn't agreement on when to take it for best benefit. In order to avoid having HMB "compete" for absorption with whey protein, try taking this supplement in the morning, at bedtime, or about 15 to 30 minutes before a workout.

Final protein pointers

Be sure you're eating a good quality, well-balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, legumes (beans), and whole grains. Without these essential foods, all the whey protein and HMB in the world isn't going to do you any good. Think about creating a nutrient network in your body; they don't work well in isolation.

Also keep in mind that while whey and HMB are considered safe for most people, there are some who should not use these supplements, including people with impaired kidney or liver function. If you have questions about whether whey and HMB are safe for you, ask your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.

    This is my favorite Total Lean flavor. I usually throw this in the blender with a frozen banana and a tablespoon of peanut butter for dinner and it's soooo good! Very filling. I've recently lost 75 pounds by drinking 1-2 shakes per day (the vanilla "ready to drink" is awesome too). I highly recommend.

      I needed to reduce my caloric intake in a major way and was use to having big meals in the evening to include fast food, fried chicken, rice n gravy, greens, Big Macs, etc. Eating like this had me big as a house, literally, but the evening hunger seemed set in stone. Meal replacements to me tasted like chalk or chocolate shake wannabees and left me wanting to puke or left me more hungry and asking "where's the beef?". I googled a high protein low carb shake that would taste good and be filling and ran across reviews of this product. Usually I have to really work with protein shakes adding cocoa, vanilla flavoring, fruit, peanut butter, bananas, almond milk, the works. With this product, all I need is 5 strawberries, 1.5 scoops, 8 oz of water and a bit of ice and I'd swear I'm at Dairy Queen enjoying a chocolate cherry blizzard. The drink is filling, delicious, and 200 calories, which is really hard to believe because it tastes like a 600 calorie strawberry chocolate milkshake from a fast food restaurant and also, because of the vitamins, I awake refreshed each morning and still not hungry.

          I have 2 scoops of the GNC Total Lean Shake 25 daily for breakfast mixed with 16 oz of almond milk. I have tried the chocolate and vanilla flavors. Since I have started using this product in combination with a reduced calorie intake and exercise, I have already lost over 20 lbs. It keeps me full for hours, has a great taste, and is easy on the digestion. Highly recommended!

                I tried Lean 25 for the first time today as a meal replacement (lunch) and I have to say it works! I had my first shake with just water today, I felt hungry afterwards so I ate a few baby carrots as well and now I feel satisfied, not hungry at all. I definitely need to use some fruit in it just to feel full longer.I'm 5'2 120 lbs working out often trying to slim down my midsection. I need to lose about 5 lbs.

                I went to my local store and purchased an individual packet for $3 to try it before I bought it. I was happy with the outcome so I got the chocolate and vanilla tubs. We've made a few shakes from each and vary the additions each time (PB2, fruit, instant coffee, more ice, more milk etc). Keeps me full for about 3 hours. Tastes pretty good (and I'm picky). Only bad thing so far is I'm more gassy (but the hubby isn't)

                  I bought total lean to kick start a 10 lb weight loss before my wedding. (I'm 5'6 goal weight 135) I follow a fairly healthy diet except when I get home from work at night I binge eat everything I see! I had a really busy week and was not able to get to the gym, but by replacing total lean with my breakfast and the binge eating, I lost 4 lbs in the first 5 days. I'm amazed with the results considering I went to the gym one time. I normally put 4 oz of skim milk, 4 ice cubes, and 2 strawberries in the blender with total lean. Delicious!

                      Really love the flavor and that it keeps me full. The cost equalizes out if you are using it as a meal replacement 2x a day like I am. It has also stopped me from eating so many carbs and processed food - which besides weight loss was my biggest goal. I've lost 5 lbs in 2 weeks! I haven't started an exercise routine yet but intend on starting tomorrow and I look forward to seeing how that really kicks my weight loss into gear! It is smoother when you use a blender and I prefer to use unsweetened almond milk to water - much creamier. It's clumpy when you mix w/a spoon but I love the taste so much it doesn't bother me. And I really like throwing a scoop of peanut butter into the rich chocolate - YUMMY!
