Fuel your body more effectively, and get the most from your workouts
Do you ever feel you're slogging through your workouts, barely able to complete what you've planned, and anxious to hit the showers? Or maybe you've wondered how you might take the next step, fuel your body more effectively, and get the most "bang for your buck" from your workouts. Either way, a great place to start is with the basics, and one of the most basic nutrients for optimal athletic performance is protein.

The A, B, Cs of protein and performance

Muscles are made of protein, so it's no surprise that protein is vital to enhancing their performance. Knowing what type, how much, and when to fit protein into your daily routine is the key to getting the most from this important nutrient.

"Wheying" your options

For repairing hardworking muscles after a cardio or resistance training ("weight lifting") workout, nothing beats whey protein. Whey comes from dairy and allows your muscles to refuel effectively. Whey protein is found in powder form and comes in a variety of flavors, making it easy to incorporate into your diet. It can be stirred into yogurt, added to a smoothie, or mixed vigorously with water or another liquid in a lidded container.

The body best absorbs protein when eaten in amounts ranging from 15 to 30 grams in a single meal or snack. Unless you're a serious body-builder, there's no benefit to eating more than 30 grams of protein at one time.

Whey protein makes its way into muscles most efficiently when taken immediately after a workout, ideally within 30 minutes. Eating whey with carbohydrates promotes the movement of the protein from your bloodstream into your muscles as well. Aim for a ratio of 1 gram of protein for every 2 to 4 grams of carbohydrate.

As an example, combine whey powder to provide about 15 grams of protein in a blender with a banana, ice, and water. A large banana adds around 30 grams of carbohydrate and most whey powders contain a bit of carbohydrate as well. This gives you a finished smoothie with 2 to 3 grams of carbohydrate for every gram of protein-an ideal ratio.

HMB power

Amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Hydroxy-methyl butyrate, or HMB, is a breakdown product of leucine, of of the essential amino acids that are used as building blocks of protein. Studies have shown that HMB can improve strength and help the body maintain muscle mass. Ideally, HMB is used in conjunction with strength training to obtain the most benefit; it is not used to improve cardiovascular athletic performance.

Our bodies can make some HMB, but it isn't found in significant amounts in most foods, so taking a supplement is the best way to get enough HMB to enhance a resistance training routine.

The optimal amount of HMB is about 3 grams per day, but there isn't agreement on when to take it for best benefit. In order to avoid having HMB "compete" for absorption with whey protein, try taking this supplement in the morning, at bedtime, or about 15 to 30 minutes before a workout.

Final protein pointers

Be sure you're eating a good quality, well-balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, legumes (beans), and whole grains. Without these essential foods, all the whey protein and HMB in the world isn't going to do you any good. Think about creating a nutrient network in your body; they don't work well in isolation.

Also keep in mind that while whey and HMB are considered safe for most people, there are some who should not use these supplements, including people with impaired kidney or liver function. If you have questions about whether whey and HMB are safe for you, ask your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.

I drink a glass of this once or twice a day & it DOES make me feel stronger & tastes great, too! I ordered the Rich Chocolate flavor. It's a little hard to completely dissolve in water, but I just shake it as I'm drinking it. I'm disabled & don't always eat right & don't exercise, so I feel this product gives me the protein to heal when I'm not well.

      So the age-long debate... exactly how much protein does one need ESPECIALLY if I'm not some hard-core athlete? AND... how much is too much protein?

      Well, I'm no biology/ medical expert - but I know my own body and the Total Lean 25 shakes have been a God-send to me in my quest to drop this excess weight.

      My biggest problem with any healthy eating/ diet that I've ever tried is I'm always SO DANG HUNGRY! These shakes REALLY FILL ME UP - I can go hours without eating and it doesn't even phase me. It is making all of the difference in the world as far as allowing me to keep my calories in vs. calories out in check. I've dropped 10 lbs in less than a month.

      Am I gym rat? Hardly! I do know that while reducing calroic intake, it is good to keep working out so I don't lose muscle mass - and I am doing just that. So, I get in a moderate 30 +/- minute workout about 4-5 days a week. So some might think that 25 grams of protein daily is too much for my lifestyle. I don't know about that. All I know is that it is working! I'm staying full & satisfied, my blood sugar is remaining constant throughout the day, and overall I feel better than I have in a long time. Plus - I'm down 10 lbs! Woot! Woot!

      Did I mention it taste good too? At first I tried just shaking it up with a blender bottle (bottle with wire mesh inside, to aide with mixing). I do NOT recommend that method of preparation. But throw some ice, water, and the pwder in a blender... and let it blend for a full 1.5 - 2 minutes and you will be in for a delicious, rich, creamy treat.

      Throw a banana or frozen fruit in every now & then for a little variety.

      Very yummy!

      Here's looking forward to my next 20 lbs gone and lots more yummy shakes! Good luck to you, too!

      I never ate breakfast until a couple of years ago. Since then, I have been searching for that quick but nutritious breakfast option. I don't have time for real breakfast prep in the AM and oatmeal only goes so far, not to mention that it's carbs only. So this product met all of my breakfast requirements: fast, tastes good, 25g of protein if you take the full dose, not too high in calories. I think it's a bit too sweet sometimes so I would mix it with water instead of milk or only do 1/2 dose.

        I am on a weight loss program that offers its own powdered protein drink and they recommend drinking for breakfast along with pre-packaged meal. I had tried the RTD before and they were pretty good so when i started this serious diet i went to the powder trying to save some money. 8oz cold water, 1/4 cup crushed ice and 1.5 scoops. Place every morning in my magic bullet blender and i have a chocolate milkshake for breakfast at about 137cal plus all the protein. More than enough sweetness and chocolateness and feels like a special treat every day. I have a chocoholic and the Rich Choc is the best. I have lost 30#'s since January. Something is working..

          Today is my second day on the shake. I am drinking it for breakfast and lunch as meal replacement to lose weight. Yesterday I had it with unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and I had trouble swallowing it once. I read tons of reviews and thought it would taste great and like chocolate. It doesnt. Its not that bad, but its not that good. Today I made it like this: 6oz water, 6oz unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 1tsp instant coffee, 1 packet splenda, 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, and the protein powder. WOW! It tastes amazing like this! Kind of like a mocha drink. It keeps me full for about 3-4 hours.
          I'll update on the weight loss later. Hopefully it works!

            This shake is really good! I learned my lesson from the French Vanilla Shake... this time I used cold, unsweetened vanilla soy milk (instead of water), and half a frozen banana, and I blended the shake. It came out perfect. Sweet, but not too sweet for me. I recommend shaking, then blending to make sure everything gets mixed evenly. Use ice or frozen fruit, to make it taste even better. I use it for lunch and I feel really full.

                The combination of protein, vitamins and fiber makes it a multi-use shake in our family (meal replacement, healthy snack, protein boost, etc.). Buying one and getting another at half-price is great. As an aside, the GNC shaker cup with the wide opening works great when adding powder with minimal spills. Shakes seem to digest very well, and we feel great.
