Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Comments about RAW HARDCORE GNC Beyond RAW® Re-Built Mass - Chocolate Brownie:

I'm the perfect example of a "hard-gainer"... It seems that no matter how much I eat, how much I work out, it takes months to put on even 5-10 lbs. And then within weeks of stopping or slowing down the workouts and calorie intake, I'll drop the weight and have to start all over again.

I've tried probably ½ dozen different protein / mass gainers over the last few years and some were "ok" and some got thrown away. This past December, I decided to try Beyond Raw - ReBuilt Mass (Chocolate Brownie). Couldn't hurt - I'd tried a bunch of others and hadn't been real impressed. To be perfectly honest, one product of any kind is NOT going to be the magic bullet. As a hard-gainer, you can't JUST workout, or JUST take-in massive calories, etc. You have to have all of the above in a structured routine. So I put together a workout routine (4x week) and wrote out a daily diet with massive calories and protein intake. A BIG part of the diet is the ReBuilt Mass. Long story short - sticking to my workouts, diet, and using the Beyond Raw Re-Built Mass religiously, in just under 90 days I gained 18 lbs of lean muscle! I've NEVER had results like that before!!

After some experimentation with the Re-Built Mass, I discovered the best way to take it (for me) is to use one level scoop in 8 oz of cold water 30-45 minutes before my workout, and 2 level scoops in 12 oz of cold water within 30 minutes after finishing my workout. I use a blender bottle (with the wire blender ball) and have never had any trouble mixing it up.

Make sure you drink plenty of water when using it as it does have Creatine in it.

Comments about RAW HARDCORE GNC Beyond RAW® Re-Built Mass - Chocolate Brownie:

Beyond Raw is my favorite supplement line, but they tend to taste horrible. This particular product tastes really good though. When cutting, I only take half of a dose (1 1/2 scoops) and still reap the benefits. I love that the creatine, fast-digesting carbs, protein, and all of the other bells and whistles are in one simple shake. I stack this mass gainer with Ravage, Re-Loaded, and Re-Feed.

Best tasting powder I've ever taken. Product built muscle but I didn't gain a pound in a month. I've taken a different mass gainer before this and had the same result so I don't blame the Re-Built Mass. I take the full 3 scoops every morning after my workout. Recovery time is amazingly quick; I'm not sore the next morning.

Comments about RAW HARDCORE GNC Beyond RAW® Re-Built Mass - Chocolate Brownie:

I saw more gains than I thought I would. After taking other gainers and proteins with not much effect, my expectations were low. But after 6 weeks of regular use and doing a dumbbell-only full body workout 5 days a week, I saw gains of appx 12 lbs. of mass. My entire upper body got noticeably bigger in a short time frame. After continued use of this product (as well as other minor supplements) and an overall increase of daily calories, I have been able to jump from 155 to 174lbs with a noticeable increase in muscle!

          The only negatives:
-Cost is a little pricey. if you catch it on sale, apply your gold card and wait for a BOGO 50%, its a fair deal. Plus the cost of new dress shirts I can no longer wear my old fitted ones!

-Side effects! In the first appx 2 weeks of use I would get really sharp headaches, as other users have stated as well. Also, be sure to work your core! The formula helps build mass, if you don't work your core you'll get a gut!

I have always been on the small side and am glad to have found a product that actually works with my normal day-to-day routine. As long as it continues to work, I will continue to pay the few extra dollars!

this is not one, but the BEST muscle/mass gainer I ever used! even though it's expensive and has few servings, but it worth it! If you really wanna see an amazing result, I recommend to buy 4 (I usually mix flavors..vanilla is good as well) for a cycle of 8 weeks 6 days a week of workout. and split the daily serving (3 scoops) into 2 (1.5 scoop each) take one in the morning, and one after workout. But one thing to keep in mind, you have to have an intense workout and put as much weights as possible so your body observe this well.
