    Health Notes

    Conjugated Linoleic Acid

    Conjugated Linoleic Acid
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
    • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
    • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
    • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

    Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams daily
Though the evidence is conflicting, some studies have shown CLA to be effective at helping people lose body fat. (more)
    Athletic Performance
    Dose: Refer to label instructions
Conjugated linoleic acid may play a role in reducing body fat. Research has reported that CLA supplementation produces minor gains in muscle size and strength in weight-training men.(more)
    Prostate Cancer
    Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce the risk of cancers at several sites, including breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, skin, and stomach.(more)
    Breast Cancer
    Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce breast cancer risk.(more)
    Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams dailyA double-blind trial found that exercising individuals taking 1,800 mg per day of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) lost more body fat after 12 weeks than did a similar group taking a placebo.1 However, two other studies found that amounts of CLA from 0.7 to 3.0 grams per day did not affect body composition.2, 3 Most double-blind trials have found that larger amounts of CLA, 3.2 to 4.2 grams per day, do reduce body fat;4, 5, 6, 7 however, one double-blind study of experienced strength-training athletes reported no effect of 6 grams per day of CLA on body fat, muscle mass, or strength improvement.8

    Athletic Performance
    Dose: Refer to label instructions

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a slightly altered form of the essential fatty acid linoleic acid. Animal research suggests an effect of CLA supplementation on reducing body fat.1, 2 Controlled human research has reported that 5.6 to 7.2 grams per day of CLA produces only non-significant gains in muscle size and strength in experienced and inexperienced weight-training men.3, 4, 5 A double-blind study of a group of trained men and women reported reduced body fat in the upper arm after 12 weeks of supplementation with 1.8 grams per day of CLA.6 Further research using more accurate techniques for measuring body composition is needed to confirm these findings.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Thermo CLA™:

I use the recommended 2 soft gels 2x per day, in the morning right when I wake up and ~2pm. It gives me lasting energy without crashing when it wears off. Definitely see muscle tone building. Good, non-jittery energy!

Only con: disrupts sleep. Can't get to sleep or keep waking up in the middle of the night.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Thermo CLA™:

Started taking Wed 8/13 and by 8/16 lost 2 lbs with no change in diet or exercise. I do watch what I eat and exercise regularly, but seem to have plateaued. Thermo CLA is helping me lose a bit more - those last 5 lbs are the hardest to lose. I don't use caffeine (no coffee, no soda, no tea) so it's making me a little jittery, but not so bad that it bothers me. Does not seem to curb appetite. Stats: 48 yr old female, 5'2" and 123 lbs. Run and/or bike 6 days a week. I take 2 with breakfast and 2 with lunch. Would not take after lunch since the high caffeine content would probably interfere with sleep.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Thermo CLA™:

I have been working out regularly and not seeing results. I will be the first to admit that my diet is the problem area. I was looking for something to boost my fat-burn, metabolism, or whatever that would help me lose weight!

I took this for 10 days, also with Garcinia Cambogia. It gave me an energy boost much the same way caffeine does. I do felt it curbed my appetite during the day, but you're not supposed to take it at night so you can sleep—well, that's when I would snack. I lost about a pound, but in the end, I can't say that I thought it was doing much for me so I returned it. Thankfully GNC doesn't give you any grief about taking products back.

For about $1/day, I would expect to see better results.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Thermo CLA™:

I am a 31 yr old female i have been using CLA Thermo for almost 2 yrs, first just to drop a few pounds in 2012 then shed 30 lbs. in 2013 to jump start my weight loss goals. I love it! It is indeed body fat, i am sure as i take a prescribed diuretic and have been yrs before trying this product. With a reduced calorie diet (1200 cal.) and none to moderate exercise i have met my goal in less than 3 months and maintained. Most of the weight came off within the first 2 months. Your body just shrinks i can even say exercise produces better results. Then i plateaued. I stopped for a while and just recently started to take them again (1000 cal) diet. I already notice a difference in in my stomach and arms. That is where i carry most of weight (i am top heavy) I can say, it takes a little while to build up in your system. Over all happy with this product. I have recommended this product to several friends, however, you have to be serious. You get out what you put into it as with any product. Try it!

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Thermo CLA™:

I started using this a little over a month ago and have lost 11 pds without exercise and diet. (I was working a job that required me to walk around out side for about 8-12 hours, 5-7 days a week.) Now I changed positions and started exercising again running/ballet/pilates. My energy levels are higher and I don't have to drink coffee while taking the pills. It doesn't make you hyper but I can feel when it wears off (appx 8hours). I might take it too late at night and I am prone to insomnia from time to time so I need to figure out if I should only take one dose a day or two.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Thermo CLA™:

I have been using this since Saturday so about 5 days.

I took the regular CLA and it didn't do a single thing for me, a friend told me about this product so I headed over to GNC grabbed 2 bottles.

The pills are HUGE but I have no trouble taking them. I take them on an empty tummy and less than 30 minutes later I am alert and ready for the day. Even after taking my prescribed sleep medicine which leaves me exremely groggy in the AM this boosts my energy.

I have not lost any weight but I have not gained. I am typically at the gym 5 to 6 days a week but this past week I was very very sick so I will later review on the weight loss end.

I was on ISAGENIX for a month hated it. THIS IS WAY BETTER AND CHEAP!

I starting using CLA as part of the women's ripped vitapak.....numerous salespeople pushed the pack over and over....I didn't think I needed all the vitamins in the pack and I was really looking for added energy since I am used to a thermogetic so switched to just a thermogetic even after seeing results with the vitapak. Well it is true the CLA definately targets the stomach fat in women, so I decided to add the CLA Thermo to my thermogetic and I continue to see and like my results. I personally only take 2 of these versus the recommended 4 a day and still love the results, it's enough for me to maintain my slimmer stomach with excercise.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Thermo CLA™:

I started taking Thermo CLA about five days ago. So far I've gone from 131 pounds to 127 pounds (so I've lost about 4 lbs in 5 days). I can't attribute all the weight loss to the CLA, because I've also run about 15 miles, swam 1,000 meters and shoveled about 8 tons of rock in the past week. Plus I've adopted a modified Paleo diet (I still eat oatmeal). So I'm not sure how much of the weight loss is due to the CLA and how much is due to the diet or the exercise.

What I do know is that the CLA really does help to boost energy. I don't drink coffee, so my exposure to caffeine is minimal. At first I was a little concerned that this supplement would make me jittery or sweaty. I was very pleased to find that it feels very natural. If you take two in the morning with a small breakfast, it just feels like you had a really restful night of sleep. (But beware - if you take it in the late afternoon, it will probably keep you up. I recommend that you take it in the morning.)

When I first opened the bottle and looked at the pills, I thought there would be no way I would be able to swallow them comfortably because they are really big. But never fear! They are actually very easy to swallow.

Overall, I recommend Thermo CLA. I don't think it's a supplement that will melt fat off of you if you aren't working out, but it will help give you extra energy for your workouts.
