    Fat burners encourage the body to use stored fat for energy, decrease the rate at which excess calories are turned into body fat, or enhance metabolism

    While there isn't a standard definition for the phrase "fat burner," diet experts generally agree these are substances that

    • encourage the body to use stored fat for energy,
    • decrease the rate at which excess calories are turned into body fat, or
    • enhance metabolism-the rate at which the body burns calories.

    Products or foods that suppress appetite or promote a feeling of fullness, such as fiber, are not true fat burners, though they may be labeled that way, and still may be useful aids to weight loss.

    Tried and true

    Several dietary supplements and natural substances have been studied for their fat-burning effects, including:

    Green tea. Research has shown green tea supplements can promote modest weight loss-a few pounds in short-term studies of up to 12 weeks, when compared to placebo-and may help prevent weight regain. Catechins, one component of green tea, appear to have a variety of fat-burning effects, including increasing metabolism and the use of fat for fuel, and decreasing the rate at which body fat is created and stored. Green tea has a good track record of safe use.

    Capsaicin. Capsaicin is the spicy-hot component of red chili peppers, and one randomized trial found that people lost twice the weight taking capsaicin compared with a placebo, over a 12-week period. The total effect was small, however: the capsaicin group lost about 2 pounds compared to a 1-pound loss in the placebo group. Capsaicin appears to increase metabolism, and supplements of up to 6 grams of capsaicin per day are considered safe and are well tolerated by most people.

    L-carnitine. Our bodies make and use L-carnitine to transport fat within cells, so that the fat can be burned for energy. Studies support that L-carnitine supplements improve fat burning in the body, but clinical trials have yet to show a weight-loss benefit in obese people. L-carnitine may be useful for improving athletic performance, however, and up to 3 grams per day is considered safe.

    New kids on the block

    Raspberry ketones. When given to mice on a high-fat, high-calorie diet, raspberry ketones protected against excess weight gain and fat accumulation in the liver. Mice aren't people, however, so keep an eye out for future research, which should clarify what kind of effects raspberry ketones may have for weight-loss in people.

    Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium). This product became more popular after the 2004 FDA ban on ephedra supplements. Bitter orange has effects similar to ephedra, including increasing metabolism, blood pressure, and heart rate, which can translate into weight loss. While bitter orange appears to be safe for short-term use-weeks, not months-in healthy adults, it also may have similar adverse effects as ephedra, so use it with caution if you have underlying health issues, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

    Thermogenics. Thermogenics refers to a broad category of substances that cause the body to produce heat through increased metabolism. Examples include fucoxanthin, a supplement derived from brown seaweed, and 7-KETO DHEA, a manufactured hormone that is related to, though not the same as, the naturally occurring human hormone DHEA. Even caffeine and green tea are considered to have some thermogenic action in the body. As with many fat-burning supplements, thermogenics can be safe for short-term use in healthy adults. However, if you have underlying health issues, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, you may need to steer clear of thermogenic weight-loss products.

    Other ways to fight the fat

    Fat burners may be worth a try, but if you have a pre-existing medical issue, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, or heart disease, check with your doctor before trying these products. And regardless of whether or not you add a fat burner to your weight management plan, there are many other steps you can take to kick start your metabolism and nudge the number on the scale in the desired direction.

    Water. You may have heard it before, but it bears repeating: staying well hydrated can help with fat loss. Aim for 64 ounces of water per day and you'll likely feel better and may be less tempted to snack mindlessly. Other noncaloric options such as hot or iced tea or sparkling water count too.

    Fiber. Fiber-from food and supplements-may be helpful to weight-loss efforts. Fiber will fill you up and has other health benefits too, such as lowering cholesterol. Focus on fiber-rich foods, such as whole grains and raw vegetables and fruit, and slowly add a fiber supplement, such as psyllium or inulin-a type of fiber which comes from chicory root-if desired. Don't forget the water, which your body needs to process the extra roughage.

    Effective exercise. High-intensity interval training can burn lots of calories quickly. This kind of exercise involves going all out-so you're breathing hard enough that talking is difficult-for a short time, such as 30 to 60 seconds, followed by a minute or two of lower-intensity activity to recover. The cycle is repeated up to 10 times for a 20-minute workout. Alternate these workouts with regular physical activity throughout the week, and as your fitness improves, you can increase the high-intensity portion of the workout, and decrease the active rest period. If you aren't exercising regularly already, talk to your doctor before starting a high-intensity interval training workout plan.

      I starting using CLA as part of the women's ripped vitapak.....numerous salespeople pushed the pack over and over....I didn't think I needed all the vitamins in the pack and I was really looking for added energy since I am used to a thermogetic so switched to just a thermogetic even after seeing results with the vitapak. Well it is true the CLA definately targets the stomach fat in women, so I decided to add the CLA Thermo to my thermogetic and I continue to see and like my results. I personally only take 2 of these versus the recommended 4 a day and still love the results, it's enough for me to maintain my slimmer stomach with excercise.

            I started taking Thermo CLA about five days ago. So far I've gone from 131 pounds to 127 pounds (so I've lost about 4 lbs in 5 days). I can't attribute all the weight loss to the CLA, because I've also run about 15 miles, swam 1,000 meters and shoveled about 8 tons of rock in the past week. Plus I've adopted a modified Paleo diet (I still eat oatmeal). So I'm not sure how much of the weight loss is due to the CLA and how much is due to the diet or the exercise.

            What I do know is that the CLA really does help to boost energy. I don't drink coffee, so my exposure to caffeine is minimal. At first I was a little concerned that this supplement would make me jittery or sweaty. I was very pleased to find that it feels very natural. If you take two in the morning with a small breakfast, it just feels like you had a really restful night of sleep. (But beware - if you take it in the late afternoon, it will probably keep you up. I recommend that you take it in the morning.)

            When I first opened the bottle and looked at the pills, I thought there would be no way I would be able to swallow them comfortably because they are really big. But never fear! They are actually very easy to swallow.

            Overall, I recommend Thermo CLA. I don't think it's a supplement that will melt fat off of you if you aren't working out, but it will help give you extra energy for your workouts.

              I have tried many things to boost energy, metabolism and nothing really seemed to work all that well. So I am giving this a try..so day one and took this a.m. and have more energy than usual..did not notice any strange taste as a few have said. I am hoping that this will help me get past that dreaded plateau and finally get rid of those last ten pounds. Combining this with a healthy clean "diet" and exercise will hopefully do the trick.

              I have been using this product for over a month now i work out 4-5 days a week and i have not seen any results or difference i think i was loosing more weight before i started using this product.I did notice lots more energy thats for sure!There was also some side effects ,stomach aches,cramping especially when i was at gym trying to work out very uncomfortable.

              At 5'5" 195lbs last year I first lost 35lbs then my weight loss stalled for months then I learned of CLA and Raspberry Ketones from Dr Oz, bought them and it kickstarted my weight loss metabolism and lost more weight. Since last November with holidays, I went up 6lbs and freaked. So NOW I'm back on these Thermo CLA and RK to kickstart again. Goal is to lose 15 lbs to reach 145 lbs. I don't workout. I'm on a slow carb diet. Take 200mg RK in the a.m. with 1 ThermoCLA and then 1 every 3hrs for 4 daily. I only have a fruit after 6pm. I have something to eat every 2hrs for a total 1000 calories daily. When I reach goal I'll increase calories slowly.

                I have been taking this product for about a week now, and I have really noticed a difference not only in my energy level, I have also noticed it in my waistline as well. I lost 100lbs about a year ago. Right after I hit my goal weight I got pregnant. I gained about 75lbs.I had my son 6 months ago and have lost a total of 60lbs since then. I eat really well and exercise 5 days a week. But I was finding it hard to get these last couple pounds off. But with this product I have already noticed a big difference and have lost 4lbs.

                    Hi Everyone,

                    I just want to start off saying that, I am a firm NON user of energy pills, due to the fact that I have an anxiety disorder. I love working out at the gym and I definitely try to use the "natural energy" that my body produces for working out. In doing so, I find myself not always working out as hard as I would like, but having said; I can't take energy pills due to the fact that I get REALLY bad anxiety from taking them, "hydroxycut, etc."

                    But! I found a solution! The GNC Total Lean Thermal CLA has done wonders for me! When eating a nice nutritional breakfast and taking one pill before working out, I have found myself getting that extra burst of energy that I longed for. It definitely gives you the extra "pep" in your workout.

                    Results:
                    Depending on how hard you work out, you will sweat! You will feel the burst of energy coming through your body and it makes you feel good! I can honestly say, that this product makes me feel good and alive.

                    I had a baby about a year and a half ago and after taking Total Lean Thermal CLA, it has helped me not only get back to my pre-pregnancy weight, but it has helped me lose an additonal 25 pounds.

                    I highly recommend this product to anyone who needs a little help at the gym with energy. Definitely eat something before you take it and if you don't feel anything, take another one! It won't be too much.
