Fuel your body more effectively, and get the most from your workouts
Do you ever feel you're slogging through your workouts, barely able to complete what you've planned, and anxious to hit the showers? Or maybe you've wondered how you might take the next step, fuel your body more effectively, and get the most "bang for your buck" from your workouts. Either way, a great place to start is with the basics, and one of the most basic nutrients for optimal athletic performance is protein.

The A, B, Cs of protein and performance

Muscles are made of protein, so it's no surprise that protein is vital to enhancing their performance. Knowing what type, how much, and when to fit protein into your daily routine is the key to getting the most from this important nutrient.

Protein particulars

"Wheying" your options

For repairing hardworking muscles after a cardio or resistance training ("weight lifting") workout, nothing beats whey protein. Whey comes from dairy and allows your muscles to refuel effectively. Whey protein is found in powder form and comes in a variety of flavors, making it easy to incorporate into your diet. It can be stirred into yogurt, added to a smoothie, or mixed vigorously with water or another liquid in a lidded container.

The body best absorbs protein when eaten in amounts ranging from 15 to 30 grams in a single meal or snack. Unless you're a serious body-builder, there's no benefit to eating more than 30 grams of protein at one time.

Whey protein makes its way into muscles most efficiently when taken immediately after a workout, ideally within 30 minutes. Eating whey with carbohydrates promotes the movement of the protein from your bloodstream into your muscles as well. Aim for a ratio of 1 gram of protein for every 2 to 4 grams of carbohydrate.

As an example, combine whey powder to provide about 15 grams of protein in a blender with a banana, ice, and water. A large banana adds around 30 grams of carbohydrate and most whey powders contain a bit of carbohydrate as well. This gives you a finished smoothie with 2 to 3 grams of carbohydrate for every gram of protein-an ideal ratio.

HMB power

Amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Hydroxy-methyl butyrate, or HMB, is a breakdown product of leucine, of of the essential amino acids that are used as building blocks of protein. Studies have shown that HMB can improve strength and help the body maintain muscle mass. Ideally, HMB is used in conjunction with strength training to obtain the most benefit; it is not used to improve cardiovascular athletic performance.

Our bodies can make some HMB, but it isn't found in significant amounts in most foods, so taking a supplement is the best way to get enough HMB to enhance a resistance training routine.

The optimal amount of HMB is about 3 grams per day, but there isn't agreement on when to take it for best benefit. In order to avoid having HMB "compete" for absorption with whey protein, try taking this supplement in the morning, at bedtime, or about 15 to 30 minutes before a workout.

Final protein pointers

Be sure you're eating a good quality, well-balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, legumes (beans), and whole grains. Without these essential foods, all the whey protein and HMB in the world isn't going to do you any good. Think about creating a nutrient network in your body; they don't work well in isolation.

Also keep in mind that while whey and HMB are considered safe for most people, there are some who should not use these supplements, including people with impaired kidney or liver function. If you have questions about whether whey and HMB are safe for you, ask your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ 25 - French Vanilla:

I have been using the Lean Shake for a few years. I recently came back from a long gym hiatus after a injury and decided to go with the Lean Shake 25 (it was not available when I last shopped at GNC)

This shake tastes GREAT! Like a McDonald's milkshake but better! I mix it as per directions (2 scoops, 8oz water) and drink it twice a day. I also follow the recommended meal plan that comes with it and that makes healthy snacking very easy. I haven't mixed fruit in to the shake as some here have, but I shall try someday.

The shake is filling, goes down easy, and is gentle on my easily upset stomach. I would recommend that you mix with the coldest water you can get though.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ 25 - French Vanilla:

I bought this in a 1 serving pack at the store so I could try multiple flavors. I'm glad I did, because I did not like this flavor at all. I used cold water, the powder, and a blender bottle. It didn't taste right, so I added an ice cube and shook it some more, to make it cold. I drank maybe 1/4 of it, and then I had to pour the rest out. It was not tasty at all. Maybe if I had used a blender, it would have come out better with crushed ice. I suggest going in-store and buying single serve packs before you buy the whole barrel.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ 25 - French Vanilla:

Im 5'7" and currently 140 lbs and my goal has been to get down to 120. To lose weight I try and eat a gram of protein per pound of body weight while watching my calorie intake (about 1200 calories/day) alongside intermittent fasting and 3-day carb cycling, but with my low calorie intake I find it difficult to get in enough protein so I've been searching for a protein powder to supplement with.

I think I've tried nearly every big-name protein powder out there and GNC's lean shake is BY FAR my favorite simply because it goes great with anything. I HATE drinking protein powders straight (it feels like punishment to me) so I've been searching for something I can mix in with foods, like a smoothie for example and this is it. It's the perfect consistency, not chalky, finely ground, and just the right amount of vanilla and sweet flavor.

I like to mix this stuff with bananas and frozen fruits like strawberries, pineapple, peaches, blueberries, and even acai. It tastes AWESOME mixed with steal cut oats and makes FANTASTIC protein muffins. I haven't tried this stuff straight yet, but I'm sure it would still be just as great. It's certainly a high-quality protein powder.

Like some of the other reviewers, this stuff will keep me full for a good 4-5 hours thanks to the added protein and definitely prevents me from snacking in between meals. A high-protein powder is a MUST for me because without it, I get hungry fast. Even when mixing it with fruit, I don't experience a sugar-crash when I use this stuff, which was a nasty side-effect of the other protein powders I tried (along with their less-than-appetizing taste).

The ONLY downside to this powder is its price. The tub isn't as large as some of the body builder protein powders you can get for the same price, so I make sure to always buy 2 at once to take advantage of GNC's buy-1-get-1-half off deal. Other than that, this has been the perfect protein powder for me.

I drink these 2 times a day with unsweetened almond milk instead of water (only adds about 35 more calories and lots of calcium). I look forward to drinking these shakes b/c they taste so good! I usually do one shake in the blender with half a frozen banana and some fresh strawberries and the other in my GNC shake bottle with just the almond milk. This makes me feel full for much longer than any other shake I have tried. Then I just add some healthy snacks in between, like carrots and hummus, and a healthy dinner and it works out to be a complete nutritional day. I would recommend these shakes to anyone.

Not too bad, I have to mix 1 scoop of this and 1 scoop pf rich chocolate, about 10 oz of milk and half a banana. Mine tend to turn out pretty thick from the blender but still good. Can be hard to swallow if you take it plain. I found that a tablespoon of yogurt makes it taste better as well.

I think it tastes much better too. I am definitely sticking with this product. I think the vanilla is better than the chocolate.
