Our commitment to crafting powerful supplements is seen through our investment in clinical research on many of our products, including GNC Total Lean Burn 60, a thermogenic formula designed to enhance metabolism and boost calorie burn. In this article, we’ll explore two of GNC’s clinical studies where Burn 60 was put to the test. Does this blend optimize energy expenditure? How does it impact calorie burning before, during, and after exercise? Can it affect perceived exertion while maintaining caloric expenditure? Let’s find out…

GNC’s accomplished team of Scientists and Registered Dietitians formulated an impressive blend of caffeine, guarana seed, black tea leaf, grape skin and seed, ginger root, and dill extracts for consumers looking to maximize their metabolism. Fueled by passion for this innovative formula, the team wanted to further understand the true impact of this product through an investment in two clinical studies. This research focused on Burn 60’s effect on energy expenditure, perceived exertion, and well-being.
HOW DOES BURN 60 Work?
In the landscape of body composition, many consumers are looking to support their weight loss goals through a variety of avenues. One of those avenues includes maximization of thermogenesis, or increasing daily calorie burn. Burn 60’s advanced formula was crafted to include ingredients that modulate chemical pathways associated with energy expenditure to support these goals.

STUDY #1
The primary goal of this study was to evaluate Burn 60’s stimulating effect on energy expenditure in combination with aerobic exercise. In doing so, subjects were provided with either the thermogenic blend or placebo followed by measurements of energy expenditure during a 60-minute pre-exercise period, a 60-minute aerobic exercise period, and a 60-minute post-exercise period. Researchers believed that Burn 60 would aid in increasing energy expenditure, supporting optimized calorie-burning potential.
WHO WERE THE STUDY PARTICIPANTS?
27 healthy men and women between the age of 18 and 55 years old participated in this study. Volunteers had a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 19 and 29 kg/m2, indicating healthy to overweight body composition.
WHAT WAS THE STUDY DESIGN?
GNC chose to conduct a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Crossover study, which is the gold standard for clinical research. This type of study design offers the most reliable clinical results as both the participants and investigators were blinded to the treatments received.
WHAT WERE THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY?
Study participants taking Burn 60 had significantly greater energy expenditure versus the placebo group in the 60-minutes before exercise, during exercise, and after exercise. In other words, Burn 60 significantly accelerated the number of calories burned at all time points. In fact, subjects burned 60% more calories after their workout when compared to the placebo group. Does that number look familiar? It’s what fueled the name of this thermogenic powerhouse product, Burn 60!
Researchers also looked at the rate of perceived exertion (RPE), a measure of how hard one feels they are working during physical activity. They found that participants taking Burn 60 had a significantly lower RPE versus the placebo group, concluding that these subjects did not feel that they had to work as hard doing the same aerobic exercise.
Study #2
The primary goal of this study was to examine whether Burn 60 has an immediate stimulating effect on energy expenditure at rest. Subjects were provided with either the Burn 60 test product or placebo followed by measurements of Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), or the number of calories burned by the body at rest to maintain basic functions, along with a Wellbeing Questionnaire to conclude the test period. Researchers believed that consumption of Burn 60 would result in enhanced energy expenditure, or calories burned.
WHO WERE THE STUDY PARTICIPANTS?
22 men and women between the age of 18 and 55 years old participated in this study. Volunteers had a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 19 and 29 kg/m2, indicating healthy to overweight body composition.
WHAT WAS THE STUDY DESIGN?
This study was a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Crossover trial to, again, be in line with the gold standard for clinical research, providing the most definitive evidence regarding the impact of the intervention on the outcome measures.
WHAT WERE THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY?
Study participants taking Burn 60 had significantly greater energy expenditure versus the placebo group.
Researchers also noted that the average peak height of resting energy expenditure was significantly higher and the time to this peak height was significantly later when taking Burn 60. In other words, participants taking Burn 60 had greater potential for maximum caloric burn that extended over a longer period of time as compared to the placebo group.
Subjects’ completion of the Wellbeing Questionnaire showed a significantly increased average rate of alertness in those taking Burn 60. Researchers also discovered that consumption of Burn 60 resulted in volunteers feeling significantly better than the placebo group.
What does this mean?
GNC’s Burn 60 has been clinically proven to incinerate calories in not just one, but TWO clinical studies. These results show that Burn 60:
- Increases the number of calories burned before, during, and after aerobic exercise
- Boosts calorie burning by 60% during the hour after exercise
- Helps exercise feel easier
- Can support a weight loss program when used in conjunction with diet and exercise
