A quick Google search for the “best protein powders” produces around millions of results. Even asking an AI chatbot the same question warrants a bit of skepticism. Can you trust what the robot is telling you? Talk about confusing and overwhelming! To save you the trouble of sifting through the chaos, GNC has curated a list of the best protein powders for 2026. As a Registered Dietitian who has worked at GNC for over a decade, I know a thing or two about what makes protein powders stand out.

For this project, I reviewed dozens (and dozens) of protein powders and singled out the best of the best. Because protein powders are so versatile, the winning products are categorized based on your health goal, the type or source of protein, and flavor.

The criteria for the winning products included:

  • Nutritional Profile: High-quality sources of protein with minimal added sugar
  • Popularity: I prioritized products based on sales and customer reviews
  • Flavor & Mixability: It must taste good with minimal clumping. Bonus points for having several flavor options
  • Additional Features: Bonus points for third-party testing and added ingredients for health benefits

Proteins for Health Goals

Why It Stands Out: Pro Performance just relaunched a new and improved version of this staple product. Not only is the flavor and mouthfeel drastically better, but the protein sources have been optimized. It utilizes whey isolate as the leading source of protein for less fat and sugar, followed by whey concentrate for superior flavor and mixability – yielding the perfect protein for beginners (and pros alike).

Each scoop is enhanced with more muscle-building leucine than standard protein powders—an essential amino acid that helps trigger muscle protein synthesis.

And it’s not just clinically backed—it’s customer-loved. Wheybolic has been a long-time best-seller, with loyal customers who keep coming back for more. GNC continues to invest in making it even better, including a brand-new clinical study where 100% of participants increased strength and muscle endurance. Plus, the updated formula delivers more protein per scoop and an even better taste.

Best Cookie Flavored Protein Powder

If you’re a fan of cookies, but don’t want the calories and guilt, then Ghost Whey Protein is for you. The flavor is off the charts thanks to collabs with Oreo and Chips Ahoy. I’m personally obsessed with actual pieces of cookies that come mixed in.

Best Unflavored Protein Powder

Sometimes, flavorless protein powders are the way to go, especially for cooking and baking. Pro Performance wins the unflavored category because it mixes well in water on its own and is also great in foods for baking.
