In today’s fast-paced and demanding world, achieving a healthy work-life balance has become increasingly challenging. The constant juggle between professional responsibilities and personal commitments can leave us feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and burnt out.

As a recovering workaholic finding balance has become a top priority for my professional and personal life. Like most, the pandemic helped me reevaluate priorities in life and seek more balance. Adopting effective strategies can help you create a more harmonious lifestyle. While these strategies aren’t always an option, incorporating them into my life has helped drastically. Here are some tried and true tips I learned on my journey these last couple years.

1. Set Clear Boundaries

Establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life is essential for maintaining balance. This was probably the hardest to tackle. I felt obligated to be available constantly to my co-workers and students. Setting clear boundaries helped me be more intentional with my work and personal time. Outside of work hours, avoid checking work emails or engaging in work-related tasks during personal time. Do your best to log off and unplug when your workday is over. Of course, this isn’t always doable but don’t let it become the habit, it should be the exception. I found myself frequently working late into the evening and weekends, responding immediately to any inquiry and request. It’s great to be available but you also need to respect your personal time.

  • Tip: Set a snooze on work email or chat notifications on your phone for outside of business hours.

By creating boundaries, you create space for relaxation, family time, and personal hobbies.

2. Prioritize and Delegate

Learn to prioritize tasks and focus on what truly matters. Delegate tasks whenever possible and create room for other activities. You may not be able to delegate tasks, so set a clear priority for projects and deadlines. I found it helpful to write a list of my current tasks and ranked them in order of priority. Understand that it is not possible to do everything at once.

  • Pro Tip: Work with your supervisor and peers to determine priorities and realistic timelines.

Effective prioritization and delegation enhance productivity and allow for a more balanced lifestyle.

3. Practice Effective Time Management

Time management is a great tool for achieving more work-life balance. While time management has always been a strength of mine, I found myself getting distracted by emails popping up or switching to another task too often. Thankfully, there are a lot of resources to help with time management, such as calendars, planners, or productivity apps to organize your schedule. Break down larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks.

  • Pro Tip: Block time on your calendar for focused work time to accomplish smaller parts of a project deadline. If you can, disconnect from the internet so you don’t have distractions. My personal favorite, flying on an airplane!

By efficiently managing your time, you can accomplish more in less time and have more freedom for personal pursuits.

4. Take Regular Breaks

Taking regular breaks throughout the workday is essential for rejuvenation and maintaining focus. Sitting in front of a computer for long periods of time can zap your energy. Engage in short walks, stretching exercises, or mindful breathing techniques to refresh your mind and body. I found stepping outside briefly helps to boost my productivity and creativity and improve concentration after getting some fresh air.

  • Pro Tip: Set a timer on your watch and take a 10 minute walk every couple hours.

Remember, breaks are not a waste of time but an investment in your overall well-being.

5. Foster Supportive Relationships

Building a strong support network both at work and in personal life is important for maintaining work-life balance. Cultivate positive relationships with colleagues, superiors, and mentors who understand the importance of a healthy work-life balance. In my pursuit of more work-life balance, I was fortunate enough to be able to make a career change. During my interviews, I made sure to ask about the company work culture and relationships within the team to join a supportive work environment. Unfortunately, this is not always an option, so be sure to surround yourself with friends and family members who provide emotional support and encouragement.

  • Pro Tip: Create time to network with your colleagues beyond just business to cultivate positive work relationships.

Relationships can provide valuable insights, advice, and understanding during challenging times.

5. Embrace Self-Care

Creating time in my schedule for self-care has made a dramatic difference in work-life balance and is fundamental. Prioritize activities that nurture your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Engage in regular exercise, get enough sleep, and maintain a balanced diet. Make time for activities you enjoy, such as hobbies, reading, or spending time in nature. Switching up my routine and trying new workout classes was something I enjoyed!

  • Pro Tip: Challenge yourself each month to try something new for self-care.

Remember self-care is not selfish; it is an essential ingredient for maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life.

6. Learn to Say No

No was never in my vocabulary before the pandemic but something I learned along my journey is that your yes is only as strong as your no. One of the most challenging but crucial aspects of work-life balance is learning to say no when necessary. Understand your limits and don’t overcommit yourself. Prioritize your well-being and set realistic expectations for what you can handle both professionally and personally. Being mindful, sometimes you can’t say no if it means losing your job!

  • Pro Tip: Identify areas you have overcommitted yourself and say no when appropriate.

By saying no to excessive work demands or nonessential commitments, you create space for the activities and relationships that truly matter.

7. Supplements Help Support Balance

Managing a balanced work-life calls for a solid foundation of wellness with convenience. Having a proper foundation including a multivitamin routine can help you meet daily nutrient needs. Certain vitamins and minerals help boost your immune system and provide energy support. Along with your daily multivitamin, find a meal replacement or protein powder to help you feel fuller longer. Grabbing a meal replacement shake takes one more thing off your plate and provides high quality protein and nutrients for the days you don’t have time to pack a lunch.

  • Pro tip: Choose a daily foundational supplement pack, such as GNC’s Vitapak Program to have all your essentials in one convenient bag.

Try out different formats and flavors of supplements to find your favorite go-to.

It’s the Journey, not the Destination

While I am still learning to manage work-life balance, the scale is a lot more even these days, where before, work outweighed life. Achieving work-life balance is an ongoing journey requiring conscious effort and self-reflection. Try implementing one or more of these strategies, to create a more rewarding and fulfilling lifestyle. Once you feel comfortable with one of these strategies, add another. Remember, work-life balance is not about achieving perfection but finding a sustainable balance to support overall well-being, happiness and reduce burnout.
